METALIX EGG CHAIR

Robert’s Comment

Originally designed in 1958 and still it works effortlessly in the finest contemporary interiors 50 years on. Designed by the great Danish Architect: Arne Jacobsen it is an icon of modern furniture design that will never date and works in any space. This is by far one of my favorite pieces. It works brilliantly as a feature chair and is really like a sculpture.

Unlike competitor retailers our units are particularly good quality with proportions and dimensions that respect the original design for an authentic look. Many competitor offerings are a lot smaller so when you sit on them you actually have to hunch your back form the curve of the backrest!

Our units also recline which adds to the comfort and experience.

About the designer: Arne Jacobsen
It is very rare that a designer’s creations become classics within their own lifetime, but Arne Jacobsen achieved just that. The Swan and Egg chair are two such furniture designs to become classics during Jacobsen’s lifetime.
One of the grandfathers of modern minimalist style, Arne Jacobsen, a Danish architect and designer, was a perfect example of the “Danish Modern” style.
A fastidious perfectionist, Jacobsen stood out in all areas of architecture, interior decoration, furniture, textile and porcelain design. It is difficult to think of a higher designation for an architect than one of his projects, St. Catherine’s college, Oxford, being granted a Grade I listing for architecture in England.

Story of the piece
The Egg chair is typically Jacobsen, combining organic form and comfort. Initially designed in his garage, it is said Jacobsen was inspired by Eero Saarinen’s “Womb chair”, from which it gains some traits.
The Egg chair was also designed as a couch, but very few of these were made due the difficulty involved in making it, plus a design “flaw” – the couch is too big to be covered by two entire cow-hides, which is just possible with the Egg chair. This leaves a visible stitching down the centre of the couch – not very Jacobsen!
