About the designer: Eero Aarnio
Aarnio was – and still is – one of the pioneers in using plastic in industrial design. Plastic material set the designers free to create every shape and use every colour they wanted. This gave birth to objects oscillating between function and fun – but always fascinating ones.
Born in 1932, Aarnio studied from 1954 to 1957 at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki and started in 1962 with his own office as an interior and industrial designer. As Aarnio himself once said, “a chair is a chair, is a chair, is a chair … but a seat does not necessarily have to be a chair”. Thanks to his innovative designs, a chair can be almost anything we can imagine.
Story of the piece
The Bubble Chair was actually a follow-up to the first chair design based on a ball shape, Aarnio’s equally-iconic (and aptly named) Ball Chair. Aarnio began by sketching one of the simplest geometric forms – the ball – and cutting part out to create a chair that is also a “room within a room”. The Bubble Chair was inspired by Aarnio’s desire to bring light into his ball, and subsequent realization that the best way to accomplish this aim was to make the ball transparent, like a soap bubble. He contacted a skylight manufacturer and asked him to blow the clear acrylic used in skylights into a bubble shape. The bubble was blown, the seat was added, and a design icon was born.
Aarnio had but one challenge left. What would his magical new chair rest on? His aesthetic sense made placing the chair on a pedestal similar to that of the ball chair a no-no, as he saw no way to create a clear pedestal for his creation without compromising the design. Instead, he opted for the not-so-obvious and hung the chair from above rather than set it on the floor. The result? A bubble, a swing, and a chair – and a piece of furniture that’s truly one of a kind.
