About the designer: Charles and Ray Eames
Married couple, Charles and Ray Eames are two of the most well-known and highly-respected designers of the twentieth century. They defined the “mid century modern” style of furniture, with their organic and innovative designs. They extended their considerable influence to architecture, exhibition design, photography, film-making, and manufacturing.

Before they even met, Charles and Ray had been laying the groundwork for their unique style of design. Charles’ keen interest in contemporary architecture was getting him kicked off Washington University’s architecture course (because “his views were too modern”), and Ray was busy studying painting with Hans Hofmann.

They both had a fascination with materials and technical ingenuity. This lead them to introduce the technology of fibreglass, reinforced plastic, mesh wiring, wood molding and polywood into their furniture products. Their impact on modern furniture design is unmatched.

Story of the piece
Arguably Charles’ and Ray Eames’s crowning glory. Throughout the 60s and 70s, no CEO’s office was complete without this pinnacle of executive opulence. Today it is one of the most recognised and admired pieces of furniture of the 20th century and even has a permanent place in New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

The Eames Lounger and Ottoman was the first chair the Eames’ designed for a high-end market. Like most of the work they created for the famed Herman Miller Furniture Company, it began with plywood – in this case, three curved plywood shells created from several thin layers of wood veneer. But unlike previous Eames creations, the Lounger and matching Ottoman were upholstered in thick, comfortable leather. The Lounge Chair stands out among their work for its unabashed luxury and meticulous handcrafting.
